Your Pituitary Gland

By Kimberly Kalfas, ND

Your pituitary gland is a tiny but mighty gland that sits in your skull behind and between your eyes. This gland is is known as the Master Gland. It is the translator between the electrical signals in your brain where the neurological system is active, to the biochemical signals in your body, known as your endocrine system. This gland releases many hormones that call the body to action through glands such as the thyroid, adrenals, ovaries, testes, and tissues in the bone, breast, uterus and kidneys. It is responsive to body changes in chemistry through feedback mechanisms that tell it to turn up or turn down the signals it is sending for optimal balancing of hormones and body.

This tiny gland is nestled in a boney landmark of the sphenoid bone known as the Sella Turcica, meaning "Turkish Saddle". In the Craniosacral rhythym described above, this hanging gland takes a ride on the bone as it moves in concert with all of the bones in the cranium and the sacrum. A disruption or restriction in this movement, whether due to injury, sinus problems, dental work, etc. can create a serious disruption in the communication that is sent to the body due to changes in tissue tension, blood supply, and release of hormones from the gland to the body.

To demonstrate the importance of this system, there are over 20 categories listed on PubMed, the premier site for medical articles, on "Hypopituitarism" or in other words, an under functioning pituitary gland. Hypopituitarism is often referred to in the medical community when something is severely wrong with the pituitary gland from birth, or from injury. Sometimes the pituitary function is hampered. Overall this creates many symptoms of discomfort and signs of downstream disease like hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue, polycystic ovaries, and incontinence to name a few. Many naturopathic therapies including homeopathy, craniosacral therapy, and bioidentical hormone replacement strategies can lead to a reawakening and better functioning of the pituitary leading to optimal wellness.
